JULY FIELD NOTES: Summer days out
Normally July is the start of the real heat, but we’re already on our third heat wave, so I’m hoping we now get more settled weather. The kind that builds through the morning, lingers into the evening, and sends everyone outdoors in search of shade, water, or a breeze.
It’s peak summer now: hot days, tall meadows, and hedgerows at their fullest. July is all about simple plans, long days outside, and adventures that make the most of it being warm and dry.
Seasonal notes
Heatwaves arrive — warm mornings, hot afternoons, and heavy air before a storm
Meadows at their fullest, grasses brushing against your legs on narrow paths
Butterflies everywhere on still days
Swifts and house martins cutting low across fields
Sudden summer downpours after long spells of heat
Days out
July is made for days out — the kind where you pack a few essentials, head off without much of a plan, and let the day unfold. A swim spot, a shaded footpath, a quiet stretch of coast, a picnic in the long grass. Everything feels slower in the heat, and carrying light makes it easier to stay out longer.
This is where the Duffel Bag comes into its own. Big enough for towels, snacks, a spare layer, and all the bits you end up taking “just in case”, but still simple and easy to carry. It’s the bag that lives by the door in July — ready for last‑minute plans, long afternoons, and those heatwave weekends when you’re outdoors more than in.
What to Wear
With the heat comes simplicity. You don’t need much — just pieces that handle bright sun, sudden showers, and long hours outside.
The Waxed Cotton Cap is the one we reach for most. Built for hot days, it keeps the sun off your face and holds its own when a summer downpour rolls through. A small thing that makes a big difference when the heat is high.
And while July is warm, a light layer still earns its place for early starts or shaded woodland paths. The Trail ¼ Zip stays useful — not for warmth, but for those moments when the breeze picks up or the temperature dips after a swim.
Together with the Duffel Bag, they make heading out simple — practical pieces for long, hot days outdoors.

What to Pack in Your July Duffel
July is the month for easy days out — swims, shaded walks, long afternoons that turn into evenings. Here’s what earns a place in the Duffel Bag when the temperature climbs.
Waxed Cotton Cap — keeps the sun off, handles sudden downpours
Sunscreen — high‑factor, small bottle, lives in the side pocket
Sunglasses — something you won’t mind getting sandy or muddy
Reusable water bottle — cold water is non‑negotiable in a heatwave
Light snacks — oat bars, fruit, nuts; things that won’t melt in the heat
Towel or microfibre cloth — for river dips, lake swims, or wiping down after a hot walk
Lightweight layer — the Trail ¼ Zip if you’re out early or staying late
Plasters — for long miles in warm weather
Dog bags — if you’ve got a four‑legged companion
Charged phone — for maps, photos, and the “where shall we go next” moment
A small waterproof pouch — for keys, wallet, and anything you don’t want getting damp
