JOURNAL #27 - FLEECE: THE UNSUNG HERO OF OUTDOOR LIVING
The Unsung Hero of Outdoor Living
When the wind picks up and the skies turn grey, there’s one fabric that quietly steps in to keep us warm, dry, and ready for adventure: fleece. Lightweight yet insulating, soft yet durable, fleece has become a staple in the British outdoor wardrobe—and for good reason.
What Is Fleece, really?
Fleece is a synthetic fabric, typically made from polyester, designed to mimic the insulating properties of wool without the weight or itch. It’s brushed to create a plush texture that traps warmth while remaining breathable. Originally developed for performance wear, fleece has evolved into a versatile layer for everything from hill walks to garden pottering.
Why We Love It
Thermal Efficiency: Fleece traps body heat without adding bulk, making it ideal for layering. Wicks away moisture
Weather-ready – A water-repellent finish means light rain won’t soak through, so you can keep going without reaching for a raincoat
Quick-Drying: Unlike natural fibres, fleece dries rapidly – perfect for unpredictable British weather
Lightweight Comfort: It’s soft, flexible, and easy to wear all day. Warm without the weight
Low Maintenance: Machine washable and resilient, fleece is built for real life.
Fleece in the Wild
Whether it’s a morning dog walk across dew-soaked fields or a coastal hike with the wind at your back, fleece is the quiet companion that makes it all more comfortable. We design ours with a minimalist silhouette and subtle detailing—so it layers seamlessly with waxed cotton, wool knits, or even your favourite denim.
Rooted in Craft, Ready for the Elements
Our fleece pieces are made in Britain, with a focus on durability and timeless design. They’re not just garments—they’re part of a lifestyle that embraces the seasons, the landscape, and the quiet joy of being outdoors.
Caring for Your Fleece
We have been constantly testing the durability of our fleece tops through constant wear and washing. It is a fabric that copes with mud, rain and sweat. Just throw it in the wash, it dries quickly and doesn’t need ironing. To keep fleece looking and performing its best:
Wash in cold or tepid water on a gentle cycle
Air dry or tumble dry on low heat
Avoid using bleach
